Personally, I think that they can be alot of fun if you have great participation on everyone's part....read as: if everyone puts at least some thought and effort into the dish that they are bringing. They are even more fun if there's a theme to it. Such as the BACON party that we did last year. We asked everyone to bring a dish that had bacon in it.

We had bacon corn bread, corn & bacon chowder soup, pasta with bacon and lots more...but the most inventive one was popcorn drenched in bacon fat and white cheese. It was absolutely lip-smacking! It was even better 'cause it was made by our friend who's day job is as a dentist...but his after hours hobby is to devour anything and everything in sight.

(SORRY NO PHOTOS from this event since we were all busy pigging out on the Bacon dishes)

Recently on Eat St. (a TV program) I was excited to learn about Bacon Jam or Spread from Skillet in Seattle. I've emailed my BFF who lives in Seattle to score me a jar...I'm going to be salivating for the next week, anxiously awaiting her arrival.

I've already given my friends the "heads-up" about the next party in October this year. It's going to be The Great Balls Party! Yep, you heard me...GREAT BALLS...so you can interpret that as spaghetti and meatballs, Jewish matzo balls, Chinese curry fish balls, Japanese Takoyaki balls, Vietnamese beef balls, watermelon balls, donut holes, cake balls or anything else you can think of.

I'd love to hear your suggestions of what you'd bring to this party.
Or if you have your own Great Balls party, be sure to share with us your great ideas!

Baker's Market Contest Giveaway

How would you like to win a shiny red, hot KitchenAid bagel toaster? This is where the Baker's Market in Vancouver will be taking place on Saturdays, from Oct. 1 - Dec. 10, 2011 (no market on Oct. 22).

I call it the "little house on the prairie" since it really is a lovely "house" that is located on a very large grassy field. There is plenty of free parking around the perimeter of the field.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eT31l93o9Xc/TlMOgpQPmmI/AAAAAAAAABc/UM2JYaN6UPk/s320/IMG_5209.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5643870712017951330" />

I first scouted out this place in the dead of winter last year...so it was really kind of glum looking....but today, what a big difference a few months and some sunshine makes! Flowers growing along the front path, grassy green fields and I even notice a lovely jungle gym playground at the back for kids. Even the caretaker had a glowing tan. Everything was in technicolor like Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mORFeS19Ccg/TlMOw9BMswI/AAAAAAAAABk/JHrNmSRRwgo/s320/IMG_5215.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5643870992201462530" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-e_L_gY1db44/TlMPspeRgYI/AAAAAAAAACM/GFMjOkyNbzQ/s320/IMG_5193.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5643872017746854274" />

Don't follow the yellow brick road, but rather Follow the Baker's Market Girl on our Lime Green road signs and you'll end up at a very sweet place, indeed!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 213px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MoY90LJm3KQ/TlMQJWrT7mI/AAAAAAAAACU/yft8YrfzE7Q/s320/IMG_5218.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5643872510917471842" />

For the customers and vendors, I'm pleased to report that this facility has separate facilities for Ladies and Gentlemen, as well as baby changing stations in both.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8xn1OvnOXR4/TlMO9qN6idI/AAAAAAAAABs/EnRzkNcMrbM/s320/IMG_5200.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5643871210492824018" />

For the vendors, there are 2 sets of double doors for easy loading-in and out and a parking lot that can fit 10 cars at the back of the building.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Wffh4ZuRLLc/TlMPJG-dLkI/AAAAAAAAAB0/TZPy75wyH1c/s320/IMG_5194.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5643871407191174722" />

There are a few electrical plugs along the wall...if you need access to an outlet, please bring your own extension cord and tape for the floor. Feast your eyes on these little beauties and I'm sure you'll be smitten with them. They are made with lots of love from La Chocolaterie.

Not sure if I can wait 'til October 1 to try them...they'll be selling at the Baker's Market in Vancouver for 10 Saturdays 'til Dec. 10, 2011.

Our colorful chocolates have been attracting attention since we opened “La Chocolaterie” in Richmond, BC, CANADA, in Dec. 2010. Our combination of high-quality ingredients, colorful presentation and smooth texture will surprise and delight you, and you can only find them here…we call it “Coconama” style chocolate...

Witchery of Coconama 1: Ingredient CombinationWe believe that chocolate has unlimited potential to be combined with ingredients from all over the world to create exciting new flavor options. We can never say which, the chocolate or the ingredients, dominate the product’s taste; together, they work in a complex and flavorful harmony. In our shop, you will find a wide selection of chocolates in surprising innovative flavors such as Green tea, Lemon Basil, Tomato and so on. We keep challenging “the world of infinity” in search of the next taste to be discovered. Our regular selection includes 27 kinds of chocolates and the flavors will vary with the seasons. Enjoy the harmony of chocolate and our selected globally-sourced ingredients.

Witchery of Coconama 2 : Colorful PresentationIt has been said that over 80% of visual information entering the eye is "color information". Color has a significant impact on the human brain both psychologically and physiologically. Many types of colorful chocolate are produced all over the world, but most of them use artificial coloring. Our products get their brilliant colors from natural sources only, never artificial, so that natural ingredients are showcased in their true form. Each ingredient lends its own color to the chocolate: black (cocoa), white (milk), green (green tea), yellow (mango), and so on, giving our chocolates a naturally beautiful appearance. Discover a new way of enjoying chocolate by using color, not just taste, to make your selection, and delight all of your senses.

Witchery of Coconama 3 : Smooth TextureWhen you place a Coco Nama chocolate in your mouth, it immediately melts in a harmonious creaminess due to its uniquely smooth texture. Just as juice and butter produce different flavor and texture sensations in the mouth, our special process of combining and emulsifying the fats in the cocoa butter and the water content in the flavoring ingredients produces a texture that is exceedingly smooth and releases a burst of delicious flavor. The result: decadent chocolate that’s irresistibly creamy.

Yellow Chick themed Baby Shower for my BFF

I've been planning my BFF's Baby Shower in my mind for as long as I can remember, even before her baby was conceived...this was also the case when I was planning her bridal shower too.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oV0KsshevUw/TlMphOJS5uI/AAAAAAAAACk/DEAudv0V_Ms/s320/IMG_5123.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5643900408734869218" />

I decided to base it on the very hilarous book HATCHED by Sloane Tanen of NYC fame.
Her wit and sarcasm hits "home" on so many pages for me. With a passion to make irresistible cannelés and small batch artisanal cookies, Cannelé & Honeybun pays attention to quaility and freshness of ingredients and never uses preservatives.

Inspired by a trip to San Francisco in fall 2009 and fell in love with cannelés (a small French pastry with soft and tender custard center and a dark, thick caramelized crust; a specialty of the Bordeaux region of France), Cannelé & Honeybun was realized.

Cannelé & Honeybun brings to the community hand-made baked treats with heart and soul. Having said that, what do you expect to see at the Baker's Market in Vancouver?

I've seen some reviews on Yelp saying that our very first marktet a few years ago was rather small, others saying that "I can make this stuff at home".

For something to become big, it must start off small. Think of a growing fruit or a growing baby....yes, although it is small, it doesn't mean it isn't great or won't be great.

As for the other comment, I can give only kudos to all the bakers who follow their passion, to give up their spare time to bake and offer it to other foodies who are also passionate about their food.

Most of the bakers who come to the Baker's Market are not full time bakers. They are full time mommies or daddies, full time folks with other types of jobs during the day.

The Baker's Market is only possible due to the participation of local community bakers. It is a fun market 'cause of the people and customers it attracts.

Cant' wait til October 1 when the Fall 2011 Baker's Market in Vancouver opens up again. It is like Xmas day for me since I can always be surprised by the scrumptious goodies that the bakers bring.

Why do I love the Baker's Market in Vancouver?

Let me count the ways....the hustle and bustle of setting up, greeting all the bakers, the sweet smell of bakers' breads, cupcakes, tarts, cakes, macarons, cake pops and more!

The reason for putting on the Baker's Market in Vancouver is for the love of people sharing, but most importantly, getting excited about homemade goodies.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UvrCBCvuxoo/Th59-rjQHSI/AAAAAAAAAAc/djXQcTIS6Lg/s320/ivy%2Boven.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5629075100055641378" />

Ladies from the Ivy Oven

I love the creativity that the different bakers bring to the Baker's Market. Each week they bring whatever they enjoy baking. Their offerings are influenced by their multi-cultural backgrounds, childhood memories, family recipes, travels abroad, local produce and fruit or their favourite things.

I love to greet customers and chat them up about their favorite goodie or how they found out about the Baker's Market. Or where they are from. Perhaps from around the corner or from around the world. It's always so humbling and fulfilling for me to see customers take time out of their busy schedules to come the Baker's Market.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ly3QHpr7FcA/Th59sLwUHCI/AAAAAAAAAAU/gOKtalN_XqA/s320/boy%2Beatin%2Bcupcake.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5629074782282849314" />

I love to see happy bakers, happy customers, smiley faces all around. How could you be sad when there is all this sweetness? Although the Baker's Market is ALOT OF HARD WORK for my entire family, I want to thank them from the bottom of my heart for all their tireless efforts and continued support. At the end of a Saturday, I'm happy to load up my trunk with all the goodies that I've traded and go home for a nice cup of afternoon tea. I always look forward to a bite of something new. I emailed my fave French baker in town, David of French Made Baking. Love the pun on the word "made" and the logo of the actual "french maid".

I know David because he participated at the Baker's Market in Vancouver previously as part of another bakery that he was working for. A few months later, he started his own baking business and now is busy as ever, selling at markets all around town.

He was kind enough to make me a sample and even drop if off at my doorstep, following my specific instructions of "please put it in a zip loc baggie and then another plastic bag and hand it from my mail box, so that the ants don't get to it before I do". This is amazing service that I did not expect, considering how busy he is and the price of gas these days!

It was the perfect size and tasted like heaven once it was toasted in the toaster over. I am proud to say that I had "commissioned a baker to bake bread for me". Just like how one would commission an artist for a painting. Baking is an art form and it's always good to make lots of friends in the art world.

ps I gobbled it up so fast that I forgot to take some photos...please check back in August for the actual baby shower photos...i'm sure you'll love the brioche photos.

***I just visited David's site today French Made Baking and found his lovely photo of the mini brioches that I asked him to make for me.

We are so excited to have David's support as one of our FEATURED VENDORS who will be at the Fall Baker's Market for all 10 Saturdays, starting from Oct. 1 - Dec. 22. Keep on baking....can't wait 'til Oct.

The Sweetie Pop Tree - the modern way to display cake pops

Inspired by the popularity of cake pops, we are excited to introduce to you, The Sweetie Pop Tree, the newest and most modern way to creatively display cake pops, French macaron pops or gourmet lollipops or any other fun treats on a stick.

The Sweetie Pop Tree will be the centerpiece of your event and the highlight of your dessert table or candy buffet table.

The Sweetie Pop Tree can be customized for each event and season by adding colorful accessories, like wooden leaves, paper flowers, birds, squirrels or acorns (all sold separately). Well, it's the brainchild of Connie Mar who is your average individual with a BIG sweet-tooth. She has travelled the world and has been a hungry customer, who has patiently and sometimes not so patiently waited in line at many a market in Asia, Europe, Caribbean, Mexico, Hawaii and on homeland soil too.

She has been to the night markets of Taiwan, Hong Kong and China, the flea markets of Mexico, the Christmas Holiday Markets in France and the Borough Market in London to just name a few.

She has accumulated many, many ideas of delectable creations but is limited in creativity and time. In other words, if you can't bake it all, let someone else do it.

But on the serious side, the Baker's Market in Vancouver was created to help all those "closet" bakers who had no stage or platform to share/sell their delightful treats. There are alot of talented people in Vancouver and you'll be surprised as to what they can do. We have bankers, lawyers, mothers, chefs who all have day jobs but like to devote their spare time to be bakers on the weekend.

Come and support your local community and have some fun. Bring the wife and kids and most importantly some re-useable containers for your goodies.
